The photo at left is of Mary Robinson in Somalia. Robinson, the 7th president of Ireland, was the first woman to hold that office. She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and is widely regarded as a transformative figure for Ireland. In her capacity with the UN, she was the first High Commissioner to visit Turkey; she criticized Ireland's immigrant policy; criticized the use of capital punishment in the U.S.; and presided over the controversial World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa in 2001. She said, "In a society where the rights and potential of woman are constrained, no man can be truly free. He may have power, but he will never have freedom."
